PARTNERS PROGRAMS

CITY at work welcomes partnership for any of our four curricular modules, and works to customize each module for a school's specific administrative, pedagogical, and student classroom and assessment needs.

MODULE 1: SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES MODULE
PHILOSOPHY
: Our Science & Social Studies module seeks to develop rigorous, hands-on, inquiry, and field based curricula that empowers teachers to creatively implement the NYC Scope and Sequence in their classrooms. The module emphasizes using interactive, inquiry-based lesson planning, fieldwork, and rigorous unit development alongside data-driven assessment.

CLASSES: Teaching Science in urban classrooms presents unique challenges and opportunities for learning and teachers generally require added support and resources for effective hands-on, inquiry-based teaching. While Science is everywhere in our world and our classrooms, what are students supposed to actually put their "hands on" in the urban classroom, or in the surrounding urban environment? How can NYC students learn about the solar system when they can't see the stars or the moon? How can they conduct fieldwork on natural ecosystems when urban wildlife is often reduced in population and diversity? Complicating matters, teachers often do not have adequate resources or time to guide hands-on learning or field activities and must often use valuable time for test preparation. Our Professional Development classes are designed to provide teachers with pacing calendars, hands-on materials, online resources, renewable, digital curricula, and instructional support to invigorate a school’s science programs through hands-on, sustainable teaching and learning. At the conclusion of the partnership, schools receive a comprehensive school curricula with hands-on activities and online resources for the partnership grade, as well as support in developing a Science Fair or Science Lab. All curricula is aligned with the NYC Science Scope and Sequence and prepares students for the Grade 4 Test at the elementary school level. Sessions may include push-in teaching for Grades K-5.

Teaching Social Studies in NYC is a wonderfully exciting prospect as NYC offers invaluable opportunities to visit historical sites, cultural institutions, and museums, as well as research primary documents, conduct interviews, and incorporate interactive, inquiry-based lessons into the curriculum. The social and cultural diversity of the city reflects the diversity and complexity of the nation's history. At the elementary level, the Social Studies module emphasizes the standardization of school-wide Social Studies curricula in preparation for the Grade 5 NYS Exam. This includes the design of class web sites with archived resources, primary documents, interviews, and fieldwork. At the high school level, the classes emphasize the development of 21st century learning tools for U.S. and Global History. When available, Social Studies Professional Development may be partnered with graduate coursework towards p-credits or Masters accreditation.

MODULE 2: TECHNOLOGY MODEL
PHILOSOPHY
: Our technology module seeks to bridge the "digital divide" and empowers students to creatively explore both everyday technologies (e.g. cell phones, PS3, and MP3 players), and more advanced technologies (e.g. computer hardware, microchips, and wireless applications).

CLASSES: In urban cities youth increasingly live, learn, and travel within technological matrixes wherein they act as "customers" and consumers rather than innovators, designers, and technicians. While NYC is a technologically sophisticated city, youth often have little access or exposure to the professional sectors and careers that power the city, such as engineering, computer science, architecture, and engineered eco-alternatives. CITY at work provides curricula that runs parallel to the NYC public school math and science standards and supplements these skills with computer, engineering, and programming basics. Students learn to apply math and science to hands-on, interactive projects that have real world applications.

MODULE 3: FILM & MULTIMEDIA MODEL
PHILOSOPHY
Our film and multimedia module enables urban youth to not only see film and multimedia as a cultural attraction, but as an increasingly powerful and influential educational and professional tool.

CLASSES: A great number of professions and crafts are necessary to run projects in film and multimedia industries. CITY at work exposes students to the diverse crafts and professions of motion picture and television through workshops and apprenticeships with Union professionals. Students learn to design new business models that reflect the need for film and multimedia as necessary media in 21st century culture and production.
